Chromium and the transition period

  

To ensure adequate glucose is partitioned to the fetus, colostrum, and early lactation milk production, cows are insulin resistant in late gestation and early lactation. Because Cr can influence insulin resistance, most studies with dairy cows start supplementation a few weeks before calving and continue for one or two months after calving.

  1. Early lactation cows(about7weeksoflactation) were used in a titration study with Cr supplementation rates of 0, 4, 8, and 16 mg/d. They found linear increases (slope = 0.16 kg milk/mg Cr) in yields of milk, milk fat, and milk protein (Wu et al., 2021).
  2. Transition cows (-3to4 week of lactation) fed approximately 0, 4, and 8mg of Cr/d. Postpartum DMI and milk yield linearly increased (0.3 kg milk/mg Cr) (Smith et al., 2005)
  3. Transition and early lactation cows (-3 until 13 wk. of lactation) fed 0 or 8 mg Cr/d (Cr-met). Milk yield increased 2.5 kg/d but no change in component yields (Kafilzadeh et al., 2012)
